What to know before travelling to North Cyprus: entry documents, getting there, money, driving and insurance

Short answer

Entry documents depend on nationality and are decided by officers at the border; a valid passport is the safe default. Sources say Turkish citizens may use a chip ID card and EU citizens a national ID card. Traffic drives on the left, sockets are Type G and the currency is the Turkish lira. Several figures could not be verified and are not given.

The full answer

As of 4 November 2026, entry documents depend on nationality and officers decide on admission, so a valid passport is the safe default. Sources say Turkish citizens may enter with a chip ID card and EU citizens with a national ID card. Entry is by Ercan Airport, ferry ports or crossings from the south. Traffic drives on the left, sockets are Type G and the currency is the Turkish lira.

Entry documents

The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs' public information page says visitors need a valid passport, and that EU citizens may use a valid passport or national ID card. It says officers decide on admission and that stays of up to 90 days may be granted, with extensions requested from the Police Immigration Department before expiry. The page is undated, so check it again before you rely on it.

A ferry agent's guide (updated 10 May 2026) says Turkish citizens can enter with a chip ID card or a passport, and that a consent letter from the other parent may be requested when a child travels with one parent. Treat this as a secondary source until the TRNC authorities confirm it.

Getting there

Sources list three routes: Ercan Airport, the ferry lines Taşucu–Girne and Mersin–Gazimağusa, and the land crossings from the south of the island. For distances and ferry times see our separate distance guide. Official port-authority pages could not be reached, so check timetables with the operator.

If you plan to travel on to the south, read the entry advice of the authorities that control that border first. UK government travel advice (updated 14 August 2026) says only pedestrians may use the Ledra Palace and Ledra Street crossings, and that goods taken south are controlled.

Money, cash and phones

The Turkish lira is the official currency. An Eastern Mediterranean University information page (2023) says euros, pounds and dollars are widely accepted and cards are used almost everywhere. No exchange rate is quoted here because rates change daily.

The TRNC Central Bank's statement of 10 March 2026 says travellers may carry up to EUR 10,000 or equivalent when leaving and that larger amounts must go through banks. Rules for amounts brought in were not found, so declare what you carry if in doubt.

Driving and electricity

Traffic drives on the left and most cars are right-hand drive; sockets are Type G (British BS-1363) at 220–240 V (Eastern Mediterranean University page, 2023). UK government advice (updated 14 August 2026) warns that driving standards are poor, that fines for seat belts, helmets and phone use are heavy, and that a hire company holding your passport as a deposit is illegal.

The same advice says cars hired in the south often have no insurance cover in the north, and that insurance for the north is sold at some crossings. Check your hire contract before you cross.

Health and travel insurance

The UK government's health advice says a GHIC or EHIC card is not a substitute for travel insurance and does not cover private care or repatriation. Whether these cards are accepted in the north was not verified, so do not assume it. Buy travel insurance that names North Cyprus.

Exceptions and limits. Border rules change and officers decide on admission. Passport-validity periods, any daily-funds amount, customs allowances for arriving passengers and health-card acceptance were not confirmed from an official TRNC page and are deliberately left out. Confirm with the TRNC authorities before you travel.

Questions buyers ask

Do I need a passport or is an ID card enough?

It depends on nationality. Sources say Turkish citizens can use a chip ID card or passport and EU citizens a passport or national ID card; others need a passport. Officers decide on admission (TRNC Foreign Ministry information page, undated; ferry agent guide, 10 May 2026).

How long can I stay?

The Foreign Ministry information page says up to 90 days may be granted and extensions are requested from the Police Immigration Department before expiry. It is undated, so confirm before travelling.

Which side of the road do they drive on?

On the left. Most cars are right-hand drive (Eastern Mediterranean University information page, 2023). UK government advice (14 August 2026) adds that hired cars from the south may not be insured in the north.

Which plug do I need?

Type G (British BS-1363) at 220–240 V, according to the same university page.

Is there a daily money requirement?

One page lists a daily-funds amount, but it could not be confirmed as currently enforced, so no figure is given here. Ask the TRNC authorities or your carrier.
