Getting around North Cyprus: airports, KIBHAS, buses, taxis, ferries and driving
As of 31 October 2026, the TRNC Public Information Office says air is the main means of travel to the TRNC, names Ercan as the main airport, lists KIBHAS buses with return routes between Ercan and all cities, and says taxis and car rental companies operate in every city and traffic drives on the left. The sources checked give no fares or timetables for any of these, so confirm them with each operator. NORTHEA does not operate any transport service.
Checked 31 October 2026 against the sources named in the text and listed below.

Transport at a glance: shuttle, taxi, rental car, bus and ferry
The cards below set the ways of moving around that the sources describe side by side. Each card says what one named source states and, where it matters, what that source leaves out. None of the sources opened for this page gives fares, timetables or journey times for any of them, so none are printed here; confirm those with each operator on the day you travel.
Suitability depends on your luggage, arrival hour, group size and whether you are ready to drive on the left, and the cards do not rank the options. Entry documents and crossings are covered on how to get to North Cyprus and North and South Cyprus border crossings; emergency numbers and other everyday facts are on practical information.

Arriving by air: Ercan, and Larnaca or Paphos
The PIO says air is the main means of travel to the TRNC and that, for countries outside Türkiye, connecting flights are available through Türkiye's airports. It does not describe Ercan as having direct scheduled flights from other countries, and this page does not either. The Ercan guide lists flights by THY, Pegasus, AJET, Mavi Gök, KHY, SunExpress and Freebird without naming destinations; airlines and routes change, so check the airport and your airline.
Two different Ercan distances to the Kyrenia area are in circulation because the sources measure to different end points. The PIO states 44 km from Ercan to Girne, while the Ercan Travel Guide states 30 km from the airport to Kyrenia Harbor. Neither gives a road route or a journey time, so read each figure only as that source's own statement and not as a trip estimate.
Some travellers fly into Larnaca or Paphos in the Republic of Cyprus and cross by land. Entry conditions then differ from arriving at Ercan; see how to get to North Cyprus and North and South Cyprus border crossings. GOV.UK (FCDO) states that you can use any crossing point to move between the north and south, and that only pedestrians can use the Ledra Palace and the Ledra and Lokmaci Street crossings.

The KIBHAS airport shuttle: what the operator states
KIBHAS (Kıbrıs Havaalanı Servisleri, Cyprus Airport Services) is the airport bus operator that the PIO names. The PIO says it offers bus services with return routes between Ercan and all cities, and the Ercan guide lists KIBHAS Havaalanları Servisi Ltd. under airport services. The cards below are the operator's own statements as read on 31 October 2026.
Two web addresses are in use. The Turkish PIO transport page links KIBHAS at kibhas.org, while the ticketing pages (online purchase, QR ticket, booking lookup) were read at kibhas.com.tr; both were reachable on 31 October 2026. We do not say which is the current official site: use the operator's own current page and check the time and stop when you book. The online timetable and fares load dynamically, so none are copied here, and private-transfer prices are left out on purpose.

Between towns: bus terminals, and what is not verified
The PIO says public transport services operate from bus terminals in Lefkoşa, Girne, Gazimağusa, Güzelyurt and Lefke, connecting all regions. It names no routes, operators, timetables or fares, and no operator source we could open lists direct town-to-town routes. This page therefore makes no claim about a direct service between any two towns, for example Girne and Gazimağusa; ask locally before you plan a day around one.
The KIBHAS sources describe trips between Ercan and the cities; none of them says that the shuttle carries passengers from one town to another. For what lies around each town, see the place pages: Lefkoşa, Girne, Gazimağusa, İskele and Karpaz, Güzelyurt and Lefke, the districts and towns map and government, districts and crossings.

Taxis: no tariff in the sources
The PIO says taxi services are available in every TRNC city, and the Ercan guide mentions a 24-hour taxi service at the airport. No official fare table, tariff or taxi operator was found, so this page prints none. Before you set off, ask for the fare or how it is calculated, and ask about luggage, payment method and a late-night pick-up.
A ministry PDF on bub.gov.ct.tr (file metadata 2020) sets technical requirements for tablet taximeters and taxi management systems. It is a device specification, not a fare list, and it does not show that such devices are fitted in any given taxi, so do not assume a metered fare. No source opened says whether a taxi from the north may carry you through a crossing point; ask the company.

Car rental and driving: rules as the notices state them
The PIO states that traffic in the TRNC operates on the left-hand side of the road, and a ministry traffic notice asks drivers who are not used to this not to drive. The notice is undated; its file metadata shows 2018, and it is linked from the Traffic Department page checked on 31 October 2026. Treat its figures as the notice's own statements and confirm current rules with the Traffic Department.
Visitor and resident licence rules are on driving licence in North Cyprus, which this page does not repeat. For buying or importing a car, see vehicle and boat dealers in North Cyprus. Everyday driving facts, including steering-wheel position, are covered on practical information.

Ferries and ports: PIO listings and operator facts kept apart
The PIO and the ferry operator Akgünler Denizcilik list different ports, so they are kept apart here. The PIO says regular and continuous ferry services run from Girne and Gazimağusa to the southern coast of Türkiye, naming Antalya, Alanya, Mersin and Taşucu, and it names no operator, schedule or fare. The operator's pages do not list Antalya or Alanya, so treat the PIO list as general.
Akgünler's FAQ names Taşucu, Mersin and Anamur in Türkiye and Kyrenia and Famagusta in the TRNC as its ports. Its schedule menu lists three passenger timetables, Taşucu-Girne, Mersin-Girne and Girne-Anamur, and none for Famagusta. The Mersin-Gazimağusa service that the operator describes is a ro-ro cargo ship carrying trucks. This page therefore does not describe a Famagusta passenger ferry, and we could not confirm whether any passenger sailing uses that port: the timetables sit on a ticketing site that blocked automated access. The operator's pages carry a 2020 footer, so confirm every item below on the day.

Electric cars, scooters, e-bikes and motorcycles
No official or operator source on public electric-vehicle charging in North Cyprus could be verified for this page, so it states no charger locations, networks, connector types, prices or coverage. If you plan to own an electric car, ask the seller or landlord about home charging and check any charging operator's own map before you rely on it.
The only official electric-vehicle item found is a ministry news item of 18 September 2026. It says an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Exhaust Emission Control Regulation added pure-electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles to those exempt from exhaust emission checks. It concerns emission checks and says nothing about chargers.
No official source was found on mopeds, scooters, electric scooters, e-bikes or motorcycle licence categories, so this page states no rule for them. The one motorcycle rule found is in the undated ministry notice (2018 file metadata): helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers.

Accessibility and families: sourced pointers only
None of the transport sources used here describes wheelchair access, ramps or assistance on buses, minibuses, taxis or ferries, so none is claimed. Ask each operator before you book. For wider coverage, see accessibility and disability services in North Cyprus and, for children, schools, nurseries and admissions.

Car-free or car-dependent? Questions to ask before choosing a base
This page cannot tell you whether a given street or village is car-free or car-dependent, and it gives no commute or journey times: the sources give none, and a time needs a stated route, hour and traffic assumption. The cards turn the verified facts into questions to put to a seller, landlord or independent buyer advisor.
For the other parts of daily life that depend on distance, see schools, nurseries and admissions, hospitals and health services, shopping, markets and supermarkets and government offices for expats.

Practical notes
- NORTHEA does not issue legal opinions; we coordinate independent legal review and assemble due diligence dossiers.
- Legal review: checked by a lawyer registered with the KKTC Bar.
- NORTHEA does not operate any transport service; schedules and fares must be confirmed with the operator.
- Corrections: write to NORTHEA via the contact page.
- Method: each statement is tied to a named source opened on 31 October 2026. The PIO pages show a 2024 footer and are otherwise undated, the ministry traffic notice is undated (2018 file metadata), the KIBHAS and Akgünler pages carry 2025 and 2020 footers, and the Hermes pages a 2026 footer. Schedules, stops, fares and rules can change; the operator's current page governs.
- Left out for lack of a verified source: fares, tariffs, timetables and journey times of every kind, taxi tariffs, bus routes and operators, public electric-vehicle charging, rules for scooters and e-bikes, and wheelchair access on any vehicle. KIBHAS private-transfer prices were left out on purpose.
- The US State Department advisory and the Akgünler ticketing site blocked automated access, so no US position and no Akgünler timetable is reported. The ministry and Ports Department sites were opened over plain http because their https versions failed from our tools; check them in a normal browser.
- Neighbourhood accessibility, including how a property relates to the transport options above, can be discussed with an independent buyer advisor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Ercan Airport to Kyrenia?
The sources name three options without fares or times: KIBHAS buses (the PIO says they run with return routes between Ercan and all cities), a 24-hour taxi service and car rental offices at the airport. Distances differ by end point: the PIO says 44 km to Girne and the Ercan guide 30 km to Kyrenia Harbor. Confirm times and prices with the operator.
Is there an airport bus from Ercan?
The PIO names KIBHAS as offering bus services with return routes between Ercan and all cities, and KIBHAS describes return trips between Ercan and every city in North Cyprus. Its online timetable lists Lefkoşa, Girne, Mağusa, Lefke and Güzelyurt. Two web addresses exist, kibhas.org and kibhas.com.tr, so use the operator's own current page for times.
Is Ercan 30 km or 44 km from Kyrenia?
Both figures come from sources with different end points. The PIO states 44 km from Ercan to Girne; the Ercan Travel Guide states 30 km from the airport to Kyrenia Harbor. Neither gives a road route or journey time, so the figures are not directly comparable.
Do buses connect the main towns?
The PIO says public transport services operate from bus terminals in Lefkoşa, Girne, Gazimağusa, Güzelyurt and Lefke, connecting all regions. It names no routes, operators, timetables or fares, and no direct town-to-town route is claimed here. It names no terminal in İskele or Karpaz.
Do taxis have fixed fares?
No official fare table or tariff was found. The PIO says taxis exist in every city, and a ministry PDF only specifies tablet taximeter devices. Ask for the fare or how it is calculated before you set off.
Can I drive on my foreign licence?
The PIO transport page says short-term visitors can drive non-commercial vehicles with global licences, including those from Türkiye, the EU and the UK, and the PIO FAQ gives 90 days from entry. Other nationalities and international permits are not addressed there. See the driving licence page and confirm with the Traffic Department.
How old must I be to hire a car?
An undated ministry traffic notice (2018 file metadata) states a car rental age of 21 and a minimum licence age of 18. It does not say whether individual companies set other limits, so ask the company.
Is there a passenger ferry to Famagusta?
The PIO names Gazimağusa among ports with regular ferry services to southern Türkiye, and Akgünler lists Famagusta as a port. But its schedule menu shows passenger timetables only for Taşucu-Girne, Mersin-Girne and Girne-Anamur, and its Mersin-Gazimağusa service is a ro-ro cargo ship. We could not confirm a passenger sailing there.
Are there public electric-vehicle chargers?
No official or operator source on public charging was verified, so no charger, network or coverage is stated. The only official item found, dated 18 September 2026, exempts electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles from exhaust emission checks and says nothing about chargers.
Can I take a hire car from Larnaca or Paphos to the north?
GOV.UK says cars hired in the Republic of Cyprus often have no insurance cover in the north and that you will not be allowed through a crossing without the correct insurance documents. Ask the rental company in writing before you travel, and see the border crossings page.
