Where Alsancak is

Turkish Wikipedia, a secondary source, describes Alsancak as a municipality in the Girne district of the TRNC and gives the Greek name as Karavas (Καραβάς). It records 6,597 inhabitants for 2011. The Union of Cyprus Municipalities writes the name as Karavas and places it on the north coast of Cyprus, in the Kyrenia district.

Local press reporting on the coastal walkway says the project's first section begins at the Girne border, which places Alsancak on the coast next to Kyrenia town. NORTHEA's own area page describes it as a village and resort strip just west of Kyrenia. Many online searches for the name "Alsancak" concern the İzmir neighbourhood, so Girne or Cyprus is worth adding to a search.

Municipality: Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel (LAÇ)

Alsancak is today covered by the Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel Belediyesi, known as LAÇ, whose official site is lacbelediyesi.org. A BRT report of 14 April 2023 quotes President Ersin Tatar recalling that the Lapta, Alsancak and Çamlıbel municipalities had merged after the municipal reform.

A Mykibris report dated 20 October 2022 still names separate mayors for Lapta and for Alsancak, so the merger took effect after that date. Turkish Wikipedia's article on Alsancak does not describe the merger, and no source opened here gives its exact effective date. Fırat Ataser is named as LAÇ mayor in press reports from 2025 and 2026.

The Alsancak coastal walkway plan

On 20 December 2025 Kıbrıs Gerçek and Gündem Kıbrıs published a LAÇ statement on the Alsancak Phase I coastal walkway, 2 to 2.5 metres wide, with walking stops, rest terraces and viewpoints. On 31 December 2025 Mayor Fırat Ataser, quoted by Haber Kıbrıs and Kıbrıs Gerçek, said works would start in the first week of January 2026.

Haber Kıbrıs reports two phases, about 2.2 km for the first, and a link between the Alsancak shore and Milli Park of roughly 6 to 6.5 km, with a December 2026 target. Kıbrıs Gerçek says the second phase runs from the Yavuz landing area, and its 2,200 metre figure is worded ambiguously. NORTHEA was told on 24 October 2026 that the walkway is open and in use by walkers; no published report confirming the opening was found.

Coast and beaches

Sources describe Alsancak as a coastal settlement. In the 31 December 2025 reports, Mayor Fırat Ataser said the shore must stay in public use and that the project would clearly separate public and private space. The walkway plans also mention social areas and water-sports areas, according to Kıbrıs Gerçek.

The 2025 edition of the Alsancak Sea Festival, the eighth, ran from 4 to 7 September in the town centre and a sports complex, organised by LAÇ according to BRT. Beach access and conditions can change, so check with the municipality before relying on any specific shoreline. NORTHEA's guide covers the wider coast.

History in brief

The Union of Cyprus Municipalities says Karavas has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with Neolithic remains found in the Gyrisma area. It adds that the acropolis of the ancient city of Lambousa lies close to the sea within the municipal boundaries, and that the city prospered from the Classical to the Early Byzantine period.

The same source states that Karavas was declared a municipality in 1884. Naming differs by source: the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and Turkish Wikipedia mention Karavas, while local press uses Alsancak. This page uses Alsancak (Karavas) so both can be found. Population and political history after 1974 are described differently by different sources and are not summarised here.
